  18. <p>     Ever since President Richard Nixon fired him as Interior
  19. Secretary in 1970, Walter Hickel has coveted the Alaska
  20. governorship he gave up to go to Washington. He has tried
  21. everything short of a coup d'etat to reclaim it--Republican
  22. primaries, write-in campaigns, even lawsuits. Last week, at 71,
  23. Hickel found yet another way to pursue his goal: he became the
  24. candidate of the Alaskan Independence Party, a fringe group that
  25. wants the state to secede from the U.S. Hickel named as his
  26. running mate state senator Jack Coghill, 65, who defected from
  27. the No. 2 spot on the Republican ticket.

  29. <p>     Distancing himself from his new party's secessionist whims,
  30. Hickel hopes to ride a wave of discontent with Republican
  31. candidate Arliss Sturgulewski, a state senator who supports
  32. legalized abortion and opposes capital punishment. G.O.P.
  33. officials fear Hickel might win enough votes to hand a November
  34. victory to Democratic candidate Tony Knowles. But one
  35. Sturgulewski supporter, senate president Tim Kelly of Anchorage,
  36. shrugs off the Hickel-Coghill threat. Says Kelly: "You've got
  37. two old dogs who want to bay at the moon one last time, but
  38. their time has gone."
